As COVID-19 continues to affect our everyday lives, The Vertex Companies, Inc (VERTEX) has implemented prudent social distancing protocols while understanding that our clients need assistance and guidance through these turbulent times. In response, VERTEX created a dedicated COVID-19 Team made up of our Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIHs), Healthcare Professionals, Masters of Public Health (MPHs), and other environmental experts to assist building owners, operators, property and facility managers as well as tenants.

Summarized below is a list of some of the services that we can implement to help minimize risk: 

Prevention Guidance Documentation

For use by the Client in providing guidance to their employees, tenants, and occupants with regard to recommended measures designed to prevent and minimize the potential spread of Coronavirus at the facility.

General Cleaning & Disinfection Protocol

For client property owners, retailers or operators that own or operate multiple properties or lease spaces. This protocol is developed in conjunction with and incorporated into the Prevention Guidance Document.

Site Specific or Project Specific Cleaning and Disinfection Plan

In preparation for or in response to a presumed or confirmed case of COVID-19 at the client property or office. This plan may include local project response team, communication plan, pre-qualification of contractors, determination on the levels of cleaning, and expectations on unique cleaning or disinfection challenges at the site, based on the property type and circumstances.

Oversight Cleaning & Disinfectant Services

To oversee the cleaning/disinfecting at the property and provide quality assurance that the cleaning contractor is performing the work in accordance with the Response Cleaning Protocol developed by VERTEX. In some cases, and at the request of the client, VERTEX will turnkey the cleaning and disinfecting services in response to a unique situation or widespread COVID-19 event.

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Filter Removal and Replacement Protocol

For use by facility management or building engineering team for the removal and replacement of Heating, Ventilation and Cooling (HVAC) filters at client properties that may be impacted by the Coronavirus.

Senior Consulting Support Services

For technical and management support to the Client and their property operations team, in order to navigate this fluid situation. Some of these support services offered from our team of CIHs may include (a) attending conference calls with Client as necessary to provide technical guidance (b) evaluating new or updated cleaning and disinfectant technologies (c) providing updates regarding latest CDC, WHO and OSHA guidance and recommendations.

Thomas Koch

Thomas Koch, CIH, MEPM

Vice President, Industrial Hygiene & EHS Services

Thomas Koch has a dynamic background in the fields of Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Health & Safety, having been employed over 25 years in industry and private practice. Mr. Koch is a Certified Industrial Hygienist with a Master’s Degree in Environmental Policy and Management. Prior to joining VERTEX, Mr. Koch was President of Koch Environmental Health, Inc., specializing in the comprehensive fields of Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Safety and Health. Mr. Koch provides expertise in comprehensive industrial hygiene, regulatory compliance including OSHA and EPA program compliance, HAZWOPER program implementation, asbestos, hazardous waste, EHS training programs, and construction safety. As an expert, Mr. Koch has provided deposition testimony and written defense response reports. 

Philip Platcow

Philip Platcow, CIH, MS

Senior Vice President, Health & Safety Programs

Philip Platcow has 34 years of professional experience as a leader in industrial hygiene, and occupational and environmental health. He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and has worked across a range of industries including energy, oil and gas, manufacturing, insurance, food and beverage and construction. He has served as the Global Director of Health and Safety for several environmental, health and safety consulting and engineering firms, assessing risk and exposures, and establishing safety culture and policies based on best practices for the work environments of his firms and clients. He has created a specialty in the area of safety culture. 

J. Brendan Phelan

J. Brendan Phelan

Senior Project Manager, CIH

J. Brendan Phelan is a Senior Project Manager and a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) with over 16 years of industrial hygiene experience, including projects relating to mold/water intrusion, biological contaminants, indoor air quality, personal exposure monitoring, noise assessments, and hazardous building materials, including asbestos, lead-based paint (LBP), and poly-chlorinated biphenyl (PCB) sealants. As the CIH on indoor environmental condition claims both in the northeast and across the United States, Mr. Phelan has managed claims that have included cause & origin investigations, subrogation analysis, remediation of 1st party & 3rd party losses, pollution policies, cost cap policies, indoor air quality/industrial hygiene claims, claims management, remedial cost feasibility reviews, and contractor negotiations. 

Nacole Caputo

Nacole Caputo, CIH

Certified Industrial Hygienist

Nacole Caputo is a seasoned manager with over 14 years of experience. As an experienced Project Manager, she realizes the importance of client relationships and completing projects on-time and within budget. Ms. Caputo is a Certified Industrial Hygienist who maintains many indoor air quality, lead and asbestos certificates, including Florida licenses for Asbestos Consultant and Mold Assessor. Her portfolio includes private, commercial, industrial, and government agencies from most industries in the marketplace. Managed and assessed thousands of asbestos and mold/indoor air quality projects throughout her career including a 40+ unit apartment complex, multi-story hotels and commercial buildings, churches, schools (K-12 and universities), single and multi-family residential and hospital/healthcare facilities. Worked with attorneys on mold loss projects including Section 8a housing and high-end residential properties. Specializing in competent use of various equipment including viable and non-viable air sampling, velocimeters, comfort parameters, various types of moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras, borescopes, and particle counters.

Notable industrial hygiene projects include: Noise assessments for industrial clients including railroad, entertainment facilities, and production facilities. Ventilation assessments for correctional facilities. Exposure assessments for various particulates and chemicals for industrial and non-industrial clients including entertainment facilities, correctional facilities, utilities/power generation, welding operations, production facilities, and petroleum terminals.

Archie Barrett, Jr.

Archie Barrett, Jr., CMC

Technical Director, Healthcare Services

Archie Barrett founded Compliance Environmental International (CEI) in 1993. Building upon his vast experiences gained from service in the United States Coast Guard, a health physics technician in the nuclear power industry and as an environmental consultant in private industry. Mr. Barrett established CEI to serve as a superior consulting firm that specialized in providing industrial hygiene and environmental consulting/engineering services to healthcare facilities. In 2019 The Vertex Companies, Inc. acquired CEI.

As Technical Director of Healthcare Services at VERTEX, Mr. Barrett provides technical guidance and management of Healthcare Industrial Hygiene staff, trains and mentors Healthcare Industrial Hygiene staff and performs business development with a focus within the Healthcare market. He is an active member in the Environmental Information Association, and a current Certification Board member for the American Council for Accredited Certification. Mr. Barrett is a Council Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant, a Council Certified Microbial Consultant, and a Council Certified Microbial Remediation Supervisor. He has over 30 years of experience in the environmental health and safety field.

Jessica Triay serves as an Industrial Hygienist for CEI. Ms. Triay provides a wide range of industrial hygiene services including industrial hygiene assessments, OSHA exposure assessments, microbial assessments, and healthcare risk assessments.
