VERTEX served as the surety’s completing construction manager on the construction of two $16 million service plazas along the Ohio Turnpike. The two plazas, on the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-80, were built concurrently with two separate building crews. VERTEX was able to provide one management team, composed of project managers, superintendents and engineers, to address numerous existing defects and challenges and bring both buildings to a successful completion. The building frame is structural steel, with an exterior façade including brick, precast concrete, EIFS, storefront, and fiberglass reinforced panels. Interior finishes include terrazzo, glass-reinforced gypsum, ceramic tile and drywall. VERTEX’s responsibilities included subcontractor/vendor ratification, development of schedule, review of shop drawings, preparation of submittals, on-site supervision and coordination of trades, review and approval of subcontractor payment applications, preparation of Owner payment requisitions, submittal of RFI’s and change order requests, preparation of as-built drawings and operation and maintenance manuals, project documentation, attendance at project meetings, budget preparation and cost control. VERTEX also reviewed claims related to the default of the original contractor, including Owner claims, subcontractor claims and co-prime claims, prepared time extension requests, and assisted the surety in negotiations and final settlements.
