Chowchilla Solar Panels

VERTEX was retained by an international property and casualty insurance carrier to assist them in investigating damages caused by the installation of solar panels, which resulted in mold growth in several locations in a private residence.

Two years following solar panel installation, visible mold growth (VMG) was identified on the ceiling in a bedroom of the residence. Further inspection identified VMG within the attic space below the solar panels. Additionally, water damage was identified directly below the solar panels.

VERTEX was asked by the carrier to conduct a site inspection and determine the cause of the VMG and water damage and the potential extent of the damage. VERTEX mobilized to the site and was able to determine that VMG and water damage was a direct result of poorly installed solar panels and that the subcontractor had not properly used the correct mounting tools. Additionally, VERTEX noted several locations that were inherently damaged during installation were improperly repaired. During VERTEX’s inspection additional locations of water damage and VMG were identified in several other locations within the residence. VERTEX was able to determine that damage in these locations was also due to poorly installed solar panels and use of incorrect mounting tools.

VERTEX is currently assisting the insurance carrier in determining a timeline for the damage to the home as well as the potential costs associated with remediation and restoration. VERTEX anticipates costs for remediation and restoration to approach approximately $120,000.
