VERTEX has been retained by various homeowner insurance carriers to assist them in their investigation of alleged smoke damage to subject properties as a result of wildfires throughout California. In response, VERTEX performs a combustion by product (CBP) Site investigation which consists of visual and olfactory observations, limited indoor air quality assessment, collection of pH readings, and collection of tape-lift and/or microvacuum (“microvac”) samples for wildfire-introduced dust characterization for CBP indicators, including soot, char, ash, and asbestos in accordance with the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) technical guidance. Results from VERTEX’s investigations typically confirms the presence or absence of CBP impacts to the subject property and allows for a Site-specific professional cleaning recommendation.

VERTEX has performed our CBP investigations in response to various wildfires that have occurred in southern, central, and northern California since at least 2021. Based on the distance of the subject property in relation to the wildfire and time since the wildfire occurred, our CBP investigation techniques expose the severity of the impacts. This has resulted in the performance of professional cleaning services as applicable, rather than the carrier providing professional cleaning services to every claim made.
