VERTEX’s subsidiary, LKB, was retained by New York State Department of Transportation for this federally and state funded project to provide construction management and construction inspection services for this full bridge replacement of the Walt Whitman Road Bridge over the Long Island Expressway (I-495) in the Town of Huntington, NY. The existing bridge was four simple spans consisting of a steel girder superstructure supported on reinforced concrete abutments and piers.
The scope of work included constructing a new, wider bridge structure to accommodate sidewalks and shoulders on both sides, along with adding additional travel lanes. The new bridge consists of three spans by the removal of the two existing shoulder piers, construction a new center concrete solid stem pier, and placement of integral abutments. The superstructure replacement consisted of a reinforced concrete deck supported by steel girders and elastomeric bearings. This project also included modifications to the existing I-495 North and South service roads, consisting of pavement widening to provide an additional turn lane and an additional through lane. In addition, this project addressed the future placement of a shoulder and a travel lane on I-495. Work Zone Traffic Control was a critical aspect of the project as Walt Whitman Road is a heavily traveled roadway by both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, which was maintained at all times. In order to achieve this, lane closures along with staged construction were utilized.
LKB’s services include detailed inspection, on-site field testing of materials and other construction activities, including field measurement and collection of data, submission of monthly and final estimates and progress reports, and preparation of record plans showing all changes from the contract plans. The construction management/inspection services include overseeing all construction operations and the placement of Work Zone Traffic Control. LKB was responsible for monitoring contract progress and maintaining all records in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Record Keeping (MURK).
This project was originally awarded to LOCKWOOD, KESSLER & BARTLETT, INC. (LKB), a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Vertex Companies, LLC since January 2021.
