Structural Assessment, Deck Collapse in Arizona

VERTEX was retained to assess the cause and extent of a residential deck and deck roof collapse reportedly from snow loading and to provide a cost estimate for repairs. VERTEX conducted a site investigation of the residence. Although some of the debris had been removed prior to our visit, VERTEX inspected the remaining components of the deck and roof to assess the cause and extent of damage from the collapse. VERTEX reviewed the joist framing, framing connections, columns, and foundations for the deck and roof structure. During the inspection, VERTEX observed various deficiencies, including improper nailing attachment of deck joists to the main residence wall, deformation of connection elements, corrosion of nails on the remaining deck section, and discoloration of joist hanger locations on the exterior wall. VERTEX determined that, although snow loading caused the immediate collapse of the deck and deck roof, the original construction of the deck had construction deficiencies that reduced the load carrying capacity of the structure. VERTEX’s observations and cost estimate were presented in the form of a written report.
