VERTEX was contracted to help design a three-hour fire-rated wall on an existing drystack marina building to enable the expansion of the facility to be the largest drystack storage facility in the United States capable of serving up to 500 boats and spanning approximately 114,000 square feet, as well as increasing the existing transient boat dock space and adding a new waterfront restaurant. Upon further investigation of the rated separation issue and discussion with stakeholders, VERTEX found a better solution and proposed an alternative design that added exposure cooling and removed the need for the rated wall, which was impractical, and added little in the way of fire safety in this instance.
The resultant alternative design was developed by VERTEX with close coordination with the owner, architect, and local authorities having jurisdiction resulting in a final design and installation that saved the owner over $500k in estimated costs while resulting in a simpler, safer, yet pragmatic design. As a result, the project team also awarded VERTEX the design of the new building’s fire sprinkler system, which was also completed successfully.
