VERTEX (under the Compass name), is serving as the Owner’s Project Manager for the Town of Westwood. Compass managed the feasibility study for the plan for its new elementary school to replace the existing Hanlon School and consider consolidating with one of two other elementary schools into a single school.
The preferred selection approved by the Town was a school which consolidated the Hanlon and Deerfield schools into one 560 student school. The new $88M, 113,000sf school will have modern education spaces and community amenities including large gym and 11×7 soccer field. It will be a Net Zero Ready school with a project Energy Use Intensity of 22 KBtu/Sf/yr and geothermal well system.
When completed, it will be one of the most energy efficient schools in Massachusetts. The project will have one of the best HVAC systems to address indoor air quality and exceeding the CDC standard for dealing with pandemic such as COVID. The project has also undergone a strict budget management process to address the highly volatile cost and supply chain issues afflicting the construction economy. The Town successfully approved the funding in Fall 2021, and the project is will broke ground in Summer 2022 with planned occupancy in the Spring of 2024.
