The multi-phase expansion of Tocumen International Airport involved 1,250,000 sq. feet of new construction, distributed into 4 levels with 20 new aircraft gates, along with infrastructure upgrades for larger aircraft. The increased capacity will allow the airport to handle approximately 25 million annual passengers, making Tocumen International Airport the primary regional hub for international air travel.
The new Terminal and Connector Building are a combination of concrete structures built on augured pile foundations, with a curved steel roof structure, clad by a standing seam metal roof, and enclosed by a curtain wall system. A separate chiller plant, energy center, three new electrical substations along with new access roads, taxiways, and aircraft staging areas were also part of the Contract. The project was awarded as a Design/Build Contract in 2012, and was delivered in 8 phases, the last of which was declared substantially complete in February 2020.
VERTEX was retained by the Surety to provide key information and guidance for decision making. VERTEX helped develop the completion strategy, addressed quality assurance issues, provided on-site monitoring, and assisted the Principal in developing technical solutions to pending work items. VERTEX was also placed in charge of coordinating the completion of the 3,500+ warranty items directly with the Obligee. Noteworthy, the project was conducted entirely in Spanish, including the technical design documents, for which VERTEX’s team was able to expertly handle without a hitch.
