VERTEX is serving as Owner’s Project Manager for the Town of Wellesley’s new Kindergarten through 5th grade Hardy Elementary School.
The school accommodates 365 students and features “neighborhood” pods for each grade, with three classrooms and a central learning space. Specialized spaces include a STEAM lab, gymnasium, art and music rooms, media centers, and outdoor classrooms. The project also includes Wellesley Public Schools’ Skills program, which provides a highly individualized and modified curriculum for students with autism spectrum disorder and/or other related disabilities that present with similar challenges.
The building is designed to be net-zero ready, including an all-electric mechanical system and capacity on the roof for photovoltaic panels. There is no natural gas on this project, but there is a diesel generator to support the all-electric mechanical systems in the event of a power outage. The landscape includes a new playground, outdoor classrooms, and a rectangular sports playing field. Several of the features incorporate the surrounding neighborhood and draw nature into the space. The new extensive drop off/pick up loop will help alleviate the former traffic issues experienced on the surrounding roads.
Hardy Elementary opened for students and staff on August 28, 2024, following a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Phase 2 operations are underway to complete additional outdoor facilities by the end of the year.
