Xpera Group was founded in August 2009 by President Ted Bumgardner, who has been in the construction industry since 1978. The 16 years prior to starting Xpera, Ted was a Principal at GAFCON, a construction consulting company recognized by Engineering News Record as one of the Top 50 Agency CM firms nationally.

2011

In October of 2011, Michael Burgess joined Xpera as Vice President. Mike was previously President of Burgess, Inc., and a highly regarded mechanical and plumbing consulting company in San Diego, which was then incorporated into Xpera. Mr. Burgess helped lead the company until his passing in 2016.

2012 – 2013

In March 2012, Xpera acquired the assets of ROEL Consulting Services, Inc., including equipment and systems, as well as the transfer of active contracts and most of the employees and outside consultants of ROEL CSI. The RCSI team is a very seasoned and experienced group of top experts and construction consultants. The common culture of construction experience, integrity and service to customers made Xpera and RCSI a natural fit. This acquisition combined two of the largest and most active construction consulting and forensic groups in San Diego County.

Alan Nevin, one of California’s leading real estate economists, joined Xpera as Director of Economic and Market Research in August 2013. Nevin provides feasibility studies for developers and investors, as well as forensic expert witness services based on his more than 25 years in practice.

2014 – 2015

In early 2014, CEQA & entitlement consulting specialist, Terri Bumgardner joined Xpera with over 26 years of experience as both a project planner and environmental planner with the City of San Diego. Brian L. Hill also joined the team, offering risk management for sustainable design and construction projects.

In September 2014, Xpera CM was launched to provide owner representation and construction project management services. The firm handled multiple projects representing nearly half a billion dollars in construction value. Xpera CM provided clients with access to a diverse range of technical expertise and strategic advisory services on an as-needed basis.

The following year in September 2015, Xpera CM announced a merger with C&S Professional services, with multiple projects in various phases of development and construction, for a combined construction value of approximately $500 million.

In late 2015 Xpera made #77 in Zweig Group’s Hot Firm list.

2016

By late 2015 it became apparent that Xpera had outgrown its current office and sought to build out a new location. By April of 2016 the TI project was completed and the company migrated to it’s new and current San Diego headquarters, 10911 Technology Place.

In early 2016, long time San Diego building industry leader Steve Grimes joined as Director of Construction Services.

In late 2016 Xpera earned Zweig Group’s Fast Growth Award.

2019

In the start of 2019, Steve Grimes gets promoted to President of Xpera Group. Founder Ted Bumgardner becomes company chairman and focuses on growing the firm’s forensic division. With the company’s growing building envelope consulting division over the past few years, Xpera Group expands in Los Angeles.

2020

In August 2020, Xpera Group has been acquired by The Vertex Companies, Inc, a global provider of forensic consulting, engineering design, construction, environmental and technology solutions throughout North America. Read the press release here.
